We explore nanoscale phenomena, enhancing energy and quantum materials for diverse applications. Our current focus includes batteries, sustainable catalysts, and 2D magnets — all investigated using advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) to probe atomic-level structural, chemical, and electronic properties.

Energy Storage

We aim to elucidate interfacial charge transfer and ion transport behavior at interfaces in battery material systems. Our focus is on studying failure modes and degradation pathways at the atomic and nano-scale of interfaces in batteries. Our goal is to develop the next generation of Lithium-ion, Li-metal, and all-solid-state batteries with improved safety, high capability, and long cycle life.

Sustainability

Our mission revolves around uncovering atomic-level mechanisms in heterogeneous catalysts. We employ advanced STEM techniques like 4D-STEM and in situ environmental microscopy to directly observe catalyst evolution and its local atomic-scale environment. This knowledge drives catalyst design for enhanced activity, selectivity, and sustainability, benefiting environmental cleanup and renewable energy innovations.

2D Quantum Materials

We delve into the coupling behavior of two-dimensional magnetic materials, harnessing their vast potential for real-world applications in data storage, spintronics, and magnetic sensing. Our research is centered around studying the impact of dimensionality and heterogeneity on their physical properties, employing advanced techniques such as cryogenic atomic and in situ 4D-STEM imaging, as well as electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS).
